Confidence. We all want it. Some of us think we have it. But sometimes, the way we move through the world tells a different story.
The truth is: confidence isn’t about always being the loudest in the room or looking like you have it all together. It’s about carrying an inner belief that you can handle what comes your way, no matter what.
But what if you’re not as confident as you think?
Here are 3 subtle signs your confidence could use some strengthening:
1. You replay conversations in your head
You know that moment when you leave a meeting, coffee date, or even a casual chat—and your brain immediately hits replay?
You find yourself thinking:
- “Why did I say it like that?”
- “Did I sound stupid?”
- “Maybe I should’ve kept quiet.”
That endless loop of overanalyzing isn’t just exhausting—it’s a sign that you don’t fully trust your voice. True confidence means being at peace with how you showed up in the moment. You don’t have to be perfect, and you don’t have to keep proving yourself after the fact.
2. You shrink back in rooms
You walk into a room and suddenly feel smaller. Maybe you keep quiet in meetings. Maybe you let others take the spotlight even when you have something valuable to say. Or maybe you physically sit in the corner so you won’t be noticed.
This shrinking back isn’t about being introverted—it’s about doubting that your presence is enough. Confident people don’t always dominate the room, but they don’t hide either. They allow themselves to be seen and heard.
If you find yourself shrinking often, it may be time to ask: What am I afraid will happen if I take up space?
3. You overthink what people think
A co-worker gives you a strange look, and you immediately wonder: Did I do something wrong?
A friend doesn’t respond right away, and you start crafting scenarios in your head.
Your boss says, “Can I talk to you later?” and you spiral into worst-case thinking.
When you’re constantly worried about how others perceive you, you end up living in their heads instead of your own. Confidence isn’t about ignoring people’s opinions altogether, but it is about anchoring yourself in your own worth first.
So, how do you build real confidence?
The good news is that confidence isn’t something you either have or don’t—it’s something you can build, like a muscle
Here are a few simple starting points:
- Shift negative self-talk. Pay attention to the way you speak to yourself. If you wouldn’t say it to a friend, don’t say it to you.
- Challenge fear. Instead of avoiding what scares you, start taking small steps toward it. Every time you push past fear, you teach your brain that you’re capable.
- Quiet doubt with truth. Doubt will always whisper, “You can’t.” Learn to answer it back with evidence of when you already have.
- Practice affirmations. Not cheesy mantras, but true, intentional reminders that keep you grounded in your worth.
Building confidence doesn’t happen overnight. It’s a daily practice, a mindset shift, and a commitment to show up differently.
